lue-eyed Frog Found in Sumatera

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - frog species that has not been known previously found in the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, Sumatra. Species included in this genus Leptobrachium unique because it has a blue iris color, either at the top or bottom.

This new type of frog found by Adiinggar Ul-Hasanah and Wempi Endarwin from Wildlife Conservation Society team in 2004, but it was still identified to genus phase alone, and unknown types. Further research conducted in 2008 by Amir Hamidy, staff Zoologicum Bogoriense Museum (MZB), Research Center for Biology, LIPI. Amir who was taking a masters with the topic and examine the taxonomic genus Leptobrachiummemeriksa frog specimens stored in museums in Malaysia, Japan, and certainly in Indonesia (MZB). "I measure and compare in detail all the morphological characters one by one from all these specimens, including all the specimens are stored in MZB-LIPI," he said.

"One of the specimens which I check has a unique character and different from other denganLeptobrachium of Sumatra, which has no color pattern in the upper body and around the posterior thigh. Of course the color of the eyes of the specimen has not been determined because the eye color will fade on specimens that have been preserved, "he continued.

Amir new look at the color of the frog eye after Adiinggar Ul-Hasanah showed photos of living specimens. Based on that information, in Amir held a brief survey Sepunti Way path. "There we met two tails. Then I further examine these frogs, including describing it," Amir said in an e-mail to Kompas.com.

Iris color in the genus Leptobrachium an important character to distinguish species. At least two new species found recently (in 2004 and 2006) from Cambodia and Laos are also based on the difference in iris color. According to taxonomic studies carried out, namely by comparing it with other kinds of frogs (in the genus Leptobrachium) from Thailand, Malaysia and several other areas of Indonesia (Sumatra, Belitung, Borneo and Java), Amir believes this is a new kind of frog.

"This frog is a species of a new type of group that included litter frogs in the genus Leptobrachium. For names of species, I give the name waysepuntiense, so his full name Leptobrachium waysepuntiense," said Amir. This species name refers to a small river near the location of its discovery, the Sungai Way Sepunti, Desa Kubu Perahu, and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park.
